Why Explainability Isn't the Goal, Alignment Is
Anyone who’s spent time in the field knows that most decisions under pressure aren’t clean. They get made in gray zones, with partial information, bad comms, and changing rules.
Warfighters learn to act anyway, not because they know everything, but because they’ve built a decision model that balances intent, timing, risk, and experience.
AI doesn’t have that. But it should at least behave in a way that tracks with operator priorities. Not just explain what it saw on a screen, but make decisions that fit the situation.
That’s the difference between explainability and alignment. And in practice, that difference matters more than most realize.

Explainability is often mistaken for trust. That’s a problem.
A model can show you what features it used to reach a conclusion, but that doesn’t mean it made the right call. Especially in military operations, the difference between correct and incorrect isn’t about features, it’s about context.
A model might highlight all the right indicators and still give a wrong output because it failed to understand the phase of mission, the risk tolerance, or the rules of engagement in effect. The explanation checks out, but the action is off-target.
The more convincing the explanation, the more dangerous this becomes. You trust a system because it seems transparent, but in reality, it keeps misaligning with what the mission needs.
That’s not a failure of communication. That’s a failure of alignment. And in practice, it breaks trust faster than any black box ever could.
