AI for Low-SWaP Edge Autonomy
Model Compression and Pruning for Embedded Inference
Large autonomy models trained in simulation or offline environments are compressed using pruning, quantization, and weight clustering. This reduces memory and compute overhead by 50–90% while preserving mission-critical decision logic. These techniques make it possible to run path planning, obstacle avoidance, and basic perception pipelines on microcontrollers or low-power SoCs.
Example: pruning ResNet‑18 and quantizing to 8-bit fixed-point enables ~3–5x faster onboard inference at ~1/10th memory cost, with negligible accuracy loss.
Distillation of Complex Policies into Lightweight Models
Policy distillation allows high-performing RL or imitation learning models to be compressed into student models small enough to run on SWaP-constrained UAVs. These distilled models retain learned behaviors (e.g. evasive maneuvers, corridor navigation, landing detection) but execute faster and with lower energy cost.
This enables Tier 1 or attritable drones to carry autonomous policies that previously required tethered or ground-based processing.
Event-Based and Frame-Sparse Inference
Traditional computer vision pipelines process full-resolution video at constant frame rates. Small UAVs can’t afford that. AI systems tuned for edge use employ event-based cameras, frame-skipping architectures, and asynchronous compute graphs that activate only when needed.
This approach cuts bandwidth and energy use while preserving real-time response. Combined with temporal filtering, it allows smarter sensing in smaller payloads.
Autonomy Stacks with No Cloud Dependence
By design, these edge-focused models are self-contained: no reliance on persistent comms, GPS, or upstream orchestration. They carry:

Hardware-Model Co-Design
